Of Stuff and Millstones

For seven wonderful years I made about half my income selling on Ebay as kalamaquilts. I cleaned my own home out and then began parting out personal estates for others. It was a special responsibility that I took seriously, taking possession of the collections of people who had died. Sorting, photographing, shelving, pricing, packaging, and sending with a wing and a prayer on to the stewardship of the next owner.

Sadly rising Ebay fees and bizarre policies have put that business out of business, but I still have 2 four shelf units with OPS (Other People's Stuff) in my office. We are getting ready to put this home on the market and I need to shift these last remnants back to the families or donate them.

There really is no point to this post except to say that I hope I treated OPS in the same manner I would like to see my own stuff treated when I'm gone. And that I'm feeling kind of melancholy because I'm going to be shifting some of my own well loved things to family and friends if they want them. I left the need for having a lot of things around me or collecting anything behind me some years ago, but some of that stuff still sticks to me like butter to the hips. Or like a millstone... Just thought I'd come here and talk about it for a little while.

What an interesting occupation, parting out personal estates.

You have such a lovely home in a beautiful setting. It must be difficult to move away.

I've never sold anything on Ebay but I'm impressed that you had a business there. Your quilts are so beautiful that it is hard for me to imagine that you got what they were truly worth. (I hope that came across as a sincere compliment!)

In my area I have found that the value of handmade quilts is grossly underestimated by the general public. Last year I had eight of mine appraised and those papers will go with the quilts when they are given to my grandchildren.

Have a great Thanksgiving.

Ohh. How interesting. All that stuff can weigh you down.

You are moving? From your A-frame that looks so cute covered in snow?

I haven't sold anything on ebay, although I want to. We'll have to chat about what's making it difficult.

Oh Heavens, I never sold any quilts! I think undervalued is the problem the world over, on any hand crafted items. Our friends in the orient can sell them so much cheaper...
I really loved selling on Ebay and still hear occasionally from people who bought stuff from me.

Times change though and it was time to move on anyway, I was working around the clock it seemed like as I also had a beauty salon.

The move is a good thing. This is the only place I've ever lived where I felt like I grew some roots though. And hopefully a nice family will get this place and love it too.

Thank you both for stopping by, Sharyn

Oh! Hopefully you won't be moving out of beautiful Washington State?!!!
Have you tried selling on Etsy.com?
I've heard it is a good place for selling handcrafted items.
Just "thots".

What a great service you did for other families - I know that often they can't do that sort of thing for themselves.

I am with you on the downsizing and not collecting more - we got rid of a lot of things this past year - and yet seems I could get rid of a lot more. I love it after things are cleared out and the new space that becomes available - either to move more things into it - or to just enjoy the freedom of more room in the house.

Good luck with selling the house - where are you going?

I agree. STUFF does become a millstone just to keep so you can pass it on to family. Then it's their millstone, right?

I didn't know there were individuals that would come and do that. I'll keep that in mind. My mother has so much "stuff", I dread when the day comes that I have to deal with it.
